PVDI – Fraunhofer PV Durability Initiative
The joint Fraunhofer ISE and Fraunhofer CSE PVDI program is an extensive durability test program that tests PV modules for long term performance and reliability utilizing tests that go way beyond the standard product certification standards. Modules are bought on the open market (no “golden” modules supplied by the manufacturers) and are evaluated based on performance and defects after highly accelerated stress tests. The modules are ranked relative to each other and receive grades based on how well they perform under different stress conditions. This provides the highest possible confidence in the long term durability and performance of modules and allows manufacturers and project developers to justify long term guarantees. Since different types of modules are compared relative to each other and results are published, new manufacturers can show that their new products are as good as existing products with a good reputation and thus gain credibility in the market. The PVDI program also includes tests for new failures, such as potential induced degradation and dynamic load testing at sub-zero temperatures, which are not covered by the existing product qualification standards.
